Taking Action to Combat Racism Research Report

Women’s Health East is proud to launch the Taking Action to Combat Racism Research Report.

This research report, which is informed by consultations with Mandarin-speaking women in Melbourne’s east, provides insight into the root causes of racism targeting Chinese women and proposes effective strategies for change.

This report explores:

  • Chinese women’s understanding and perception of racism
  • Chinese women’s experiences of racism and helpseeking behaviours
  • Drivers of racism experienced by Chinese women
  • Chinese women’s ideas for strategies to combat racism.

Project Background

The Taking Action to Combat Racism Project is a two-year initiative delivered from August 2022 to June 2024. The project is led by Women’s Health East and funded by Manningham Council, under the Manningham Community Grant Program. It was developed in response to the escalating reports of racism targeting the Chinese community during the COVID-19 pandemic. The project engaged with local Chinese women and explored their experiences of racism and gather insights into potential strategies to combat racism.

The project activities, including information sessions, focus group discussions and co-design workshops, were facilitated in Mandarin, a language preferred by local Chinese women, by a Chinese-background Bicultural Worker. In doing so, we were able to build trust and hear the firsthand experiences and ideas of Chinese women in a safe space. Additionally, the project applied a gender lens, acknowledging that Chinese women may experience a unique form of racism intersecting with sexism.
